Review the course outline for the Institute
CLTI has a two-fold mission:
-
To promote “best practices” in leadership development which instill three core leadership values that change both behavior and thinking:
- self-mastery (independence and personal responsibility)
- interdependence (working effectively within and among groups)
- reflective leadership (shared group thinking that focuses on new, cooperative approaches to community problem-solving, and creation of new and needed programs, products and services)
- To build, nurture and support the community-based leadership infrastructure that will promote environmentally appropriate, sustainable, long-term community development.
Leadership Areas of Study: Translating good theory into great practical application
Institute courses present the study of the three core values within the context of creating sustainable, healthy environments in urban America where historic economic and social ills account for large and growing numbers of marginalized, alienated and increasingly dependent communities.
Topics and activities in the area of self-mastery include:
- Being proactive rather than reactive
- Beginning with the outcome in mind
- Living above the line: Putting first things first
Topics and activities in the area of interdependence include:
- Win/Win strategy as a personal life habit
- Listening to understand; speaking to be understood
- Synergy: the collective sum is larger than its individual parts
Topics and activities in the area of reflective leadership include:
- Purpose and outcome as driving productive activities
- Using silence to harness group creative possibilities
- Eliminating the blind spots: seeing beyond what usually blocks our line of vision
Environmental Areas of Study: Building leaders for environmental stewardship
Institute courses focus on measurable and sustainable water quality improvement and related issues and activities. Environmental topics include:
- How our watersheds are contaminated
- How water contaminants are removed
- How water contaminants affect our health
- Storm water run-off: causes and cures
- How to organize a sustainable environmental action plan
- Environmental law and enforcement
- Cultural diversity and storm water management
- How individual and collective community actions can improve water quality
The Institute’s course content seeks to reinforce the three core values of self-mastery, interdependence and reflective leadership, while addressing stormwater runoff issues and improving the quantity and quality of drinking water.
